Steam Machine Review
26/06/2026

Background
Following the resounding success of the Steam Deck, Valve has confidently continued to develop its own ecosystem of gaming devices. The Steam Deck has demonstrated that users are ready for new types of gaming platforms that combine portability, openness, and access to Steam’s vast library.
Riding the wave of this success, Valve has revisited the idea of the Steam Machine —a concept that was previously ahead of its time. Now, drawing on its accumulated experience, an optimized SteamOS, and growing demand for compact gaming systems, the company aims to create a device that “combines the best of both worlds”: the simplicity of a console and the flexibility of a PC.
In its presentations, Valve emphasizes the following ideas:
Instant access to games without complicated setup.
Seamless integration with the Steam library.
Hardware-level optimization for stable gameplay.
Compact design and minimalism for use in the living room.
In fact, the Steam Machine is positioned as the next stage in the evolution of home gaming—a device that lets you forget about drivers, settings, and upgrades and just play.

Device Description
The Steam Machine is a compact desktop PC in a mini-PC form factor that fits easily next to a TV or monitor. The device’s design resembles that of modern media players or game consoles: a minimalist case, understated color, compact dimensions, and no unnecessary elements.
The hardware includes:
A 6-core AMD Zen 4 processor with 12 threads.
A semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 graphics processor with 28 compute units.
A 512 GB or 2 TB SSD for fast system and game loading.
16 GB of DDR5 RAM + 8 GB of GDDR6 video memory.
As for connectivity, the Steam Machine supports HDMI or DisplayPort for connecting to a TV or monitor, is equipped with USB ports for gamepads, a keyboard, and a mouse, and features Ethernet and Wi-Fi for a stable internet connection, as well as Bluetooth for connecting wireless accessories.
The device is designed for use with a gamepad, but can easily be transformed into a classic PC with a keyboard and mouse if needed.
A key feature is the switch to SteamOS—an operating system that completely transforms the PC experience.

SteamOS
SteamOS is a specialized Linux-based operating system developed by Valve to maximize the gaming experience. It is designed with gamers’ needs in mind and serves as a full-fledged alternative to traditional operating systems.
Key features of SteamOS:
Quick startup and instant access to the Steam library.
An interface optimized for gamepad control.
Built-in Proton support for running Windows games.
Resource optimization for stable FPS.
SteamOS minimizes background processes and allows the system to focus specifically on gaming performance. As a result, even mid-range hardware can deliver better performance than similar configurations running standard operating systems.

Gaming Performance
The Steam Machine delivers consistent average performance, allowing you to comfortably play most modern games at 1080p with moderate or high graphics settings.
This is more than enough for casual and mid-range gaming: popular online games run smoothly, most AAA titles launch without major issues, and SteamOS optimization helps prevent unnecessary FPS drops.
At the same time, it’s important to understand that modern gaming PCs can offer significantly higher performance:
Gaming at 1440p and 4K resolutions.
Maximum graphics settings.
Ray tracing and new technologies.

Alternative: Mini PC
Essentially, a Steam Machine is a compact PC with a specialized operating system. This means that users aren't limited to just one option.
The GamingPC catalog features a wide selection of mini-PCs that can:
Deliver comparable performance.
Outperform a Steam Machine in terms of power.
Run on both Windows and Linux.
In our store, you’ll find a selection of configurations suitable for gaming, work, and multimedia—ranging from affordable models to high-performance solutions.
The Steam Machine is an interesting attempt to make PC gaming more accessible, simple, and intuitive for a broad audience. The device successfully combines compactness, the convenience of a console, and the openness of a PC platform, making it an attractive option for those who want to play without unnecessary configuration.
However, for experienced users and enthusiasts seeking maximum performance, flexibility, and upgradeability, classic gaming PCs remain the better solution—especially when it comes to modern titles with high graphics and performance requirements.
